Demonstrators chanted about women's and gay rights, implying that they were threatened by religious law. Out of all the protests I have filmed, this was by far the calmest. The march made little noise as it proceeded to Downing Street. In previous years, celebration rallies for Al-Quds Day in London have seen clashes break out between demonstrators and far-right nationalist groups such as the English Defence League (EDL). Their chants included, amongst other things, "democracy for Iran, peace for Palestine" and "down with hypocrites." The latter chant seemed to be targeted at the organizers of the Al-Quds march, the Islamic Human Rights Commission, which apparently supports the regimes in both Iran and Syria. When I approached a member of the counter-demonstration, asking him if he would be willing to explain precisely what he was protesting, he quite aggressively declined. The entire event had a distinctly 'Islamic' tone to it, with repeated religious invocations amongst the chants, which was not surprising considering its organizers. Many protesters carried signs and flags in support of Hizballah. Amongst the attendees were the Rabbis of Neturai Karta, the anti-Zionist organization of Orthodox Jews, who were particularly popular with the photographers covering the event. <img
